Healthcare Engineering: Making Regenerative Medicines

Professor David John Williams, Professor of Healthcare Engineering and Director of the Research School of Health and Life Sciences, Loughborough University, gave a lecture on October 16, 2013 titled “Healthcare Engineering: Making Regenerative Medicines” at Theatre A, Chow Yei Ching Building.

Engineering applied to healthcare can make a significant difference to people's lives, this is particularly important in our aging society. Both healthcare products and their manufacturing are highly regulated and require precise engineering solutions. Emerging technologies using living biological materials such as stem cells to treat disease add more complexity. This presentation showed current work on the manufacturing of stem cells for use as regenerative medicines and describe the engineering challenges in this new field.
