  Symposium on Current Trends in Higher Education  
     
  A half-day symposium will be held on September 5, 2007, Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm at Lecture Theatre 6, Meng Wah Complex, HKU.  
     
  Two distinguished visitors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are going to speak on current trends in higher education. Professor William Brustein, an Associate Provost at UIUC, will speak on the building blocks, barriers and steps of building a global university. Professor Pierre Wiltzius, the Director of Beckman Institute, will speak on ways to encourage and facilitate inter-disciplinary research, and how a large research institute, Beckman, is built in less than 20 years.  
     
  The following local speakers will also come and take part in the roundtable discussion:

Professor Alexander Wai, Dean of Engineering, PolyU
Professor Philip Chan, Dean of Engineering, HKUST
Professor Helen Meng, Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Engineering, CUHK
Professor Paul Cheung, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, HKU
Professor Sun Kwok, Dean of Science, HKU
Professor Ian Holliday, Dean of Social Sciences, HKU
 
     
  The topics will appeal to scholars and senior management people interested in the planning and developmental work of tertiary institutes.
